Viviane Janouin-Benanti

“Does the truth surpass the imagination?” Viviane Janouin-Benanti is inclined to think so.

Does the truth surpass the imagination?

While studying law, she had been deeply shocked by the case of the “Woman Held Captive in Poitiers.” The horror of the events was already inconceivable enough: a woman held captive for 25 years, discovered completely naked, emaciated, and driven mad by her captivity.

But the fact that the scene took place in a luxurious mansion in Poitiers and among a well-respected social circle was a completely implausible situation in a novel. Yet it was the truth.

Viviane Janouin-Benanti had promised herself she would write this woman’s story one day. Through her work in the nonprofit sector, she went on to encounter many heartbreaking cases and surprising situations.
